Some of the action can be good too, if a bit over the top until Wu Jing-Sammo Hung final bout which is as fine as expected, but can’t redeem everything that comes before it. All those veterans also bring a familiarity to most fans that can carry occasional scenes as it is always a joy to see, let’s say, Danny Lee doing his old cop number as he chastises crime bosses Hung and Yam. Fatal Move only comes alive in occasional bits mostly due to the many veterans cast here like Sammo Hung, Simon Yam, Maggie Siu and Danny Lee who give some characters more punch. This film could serious use another editor as at over 110 minutes it is easily 20 minutes longer than it needs to be, with Law mistaking his slow pace as an easier path towards heavy drama. It also mostly fails to exist as a large triad bloodbath even with fairly explicit Category III violence as Law’s approach is just too dull to make viewers engaged between the many action scenes. Fatal Move would like to be a triad tragedy where a bad move cost most of its cast lives, but fails to earn its drama. Like Law previous Fatal Contact this hopes to combine action with a very dour perspective. Most of the main players from Sha Po Lang (minus Donnie Yen) are reunited in this Dennis Law triad film. Most of the action plot seems perfunctory and functional, it is there just because one expects a Jackie Chan-Sammo Hung film to include some of those instead of enlighten the family drama, or at least help making it more unusual, it just help Heart of Dragon feels even more unfocused. Heart of the Dragon never movies beyond what one would expect for a mediocre prestige western film on this subject this really is Hong Kong’s Dominic and Eugene or Rain Man and that is not good despite the occasional critical attention those films got at time. Sammo and Jackie have a long built solid chemistry that help them sell all the brothers complex interactions and Hung does a solid if mostly expected performance in the more showy role. Hung directs and both co-stars in this tale of a cop (Chan) that has to do his duty while also taking care of his autistic brother (Hung). Two great artists one should treat serious (Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan) decide to make a film that we should take serious with predictable disappointing results.
